Book Review: An Uncertain Choice

1743901145

Seventeen-year-old Lady Rosemarie Montfort is struggling to maintain control over Ashby while trying to come to grips with the promise her parents made to the church when she was a child, the promise that Lady Rosemarie would become a nun on her eighteenth birthday. Rosemarie only learned of this promise when her parents died, and she had finally begun to accept it when her godfather, the Duke of Rivenshire, arrived to tell her there was a loophole. If she can marry before midnight on her eighteenth birthday, the contract will be broken. With her eighteenth birthday only a month away, Rosemarie agrees to let the three knights that her godfather brought with him compete to win her affection.

Even with romance in the air, life must go on. The sheriff of Ashby resents having to take orders from a woman, especially one as young as Rosemarie, and it’s not easy keeping him in line. Added to that is the conflict between Rosemarie’s long-time advisor, Abbot Francis Michael, and her godfather. And to make matters worse, treachery breaks out among her suitors, and the evidence seems to point to the one man she wants the most to be innocent.

This is an exciting, clean romance with a fairy tale feel, complete with ruthless villains and brave heroes.

Book Review: Little Red Riding Hood: Werewolf Slayer

little-red-riding-hood-werewolf-slayer-1-kindle

This retelling of Little Red Riding Hood opens up a wonderful new world of danger and romance. The history of the hood and its power is revealed as is the true nature of the wolf. Nothing is as innocuous as it seems, and our hero isn’t the helpless little girl we read about in other versions. This story is a little dark in places, but it will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend it.

Book Review: Spinner

51GpKhxv09L

Spinner is a wonderfully creative retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin story. The novella turns the familiar old tale into a new story of love and magic.

I may have given this novella 5 stars instead of 4 if it hadn’t been for the fact that the story is written in first person present tense. Unfortunately, that makes the writing seem choppy and quite jarring in places, especially when the main character is telling of something she remembered from the past. In those scenes, the verb tense shifts from present to past to present. It would have been much better if the story had been written in third person past tense. Even first person past tense would have been an improvement. There were also several typos and grammatical errors that briefly brought me back into the real world when I was enjoying the tale. The book could benefit from another editing session.

However, overall, I really enjoyed the story. I look forward to seeing what other work this author creates.

Book Review: The Shadows

elsewhere

Creative and curious Olive moves into a huge old house with her mathematician mom and dad. While her parents love her, they don’t really understand her, and she’s often left to her own devices. She explores her new home and is fascinated by all the things left behind when the previous owner died. One item that she finds when she’s rummaging through the closets and dresser drawers is a pair of old glasses. When she puts them on, she sees things move in the many paintings lining the walls of the old house. But that’s not the strangest thing she learns. She finds out that when she wears the glasses, she can actually enter the paintings.

With help from the three talking cats who lived there with the previous owner, Olive explores the creepy basement, scary attic, and the worlds painted in the pictures. She makes friends and enemies and tries to ignore the resentful vibes given off by the house itself.

Her journey of exploration and discovery lead her not only conquer the evil she encounters but also helps her find her courage.

West creates an exciting world and some wonderful and realistic characters. I highly recommend this book.

Book Review – The Ever After

81-WEOGaKUL

May Bird is a bit of an outcast. She lives with her mom and her hairless cat, Somber Kitty. She doesn’t have any friends, and is constantly being taunted by her schoolmates. One way she deals with the teasing of the other kids who just don’t understand her is to disappear into the woods surrounding her old West Virginian home. There, she can become a warrior princess and leave all her troubles behind. One day, she falls into a lake in the woods behind her house, and spirals down into a whole new and incredibly strange world.

There, she is surrounded by ghosts and specters and must be careful not to fall into the hands of the evil Bo Cleevil.

Anderson had created a wonderful, colorful, and elaborate world full of imaginative creatures and items. We watch as May gains confidence and begins to take charge of her life. This is an excellent “coming of age” story.

It might be a little scary for small children.

Book Review – Serafina and the Black Cloak

behind-stars-book

I loved this book. Even with all of Serafina’s idiosyncrasies, the way Robert Beatty described her made her actions seem perfectly normal, for her.

Serafina is a rather strange girl who lives in the basement of the Biltmore Mansion with her father who works as a mechanic in the mansion. She is supposed to stay hidden, for reasons that aren’t revealed until later in the book, but her curiosity leads her to pushing those rules. She is seen one night by the wrong person, and everything goes crazy from then on.

Beatty paints a wonderful and believable picture of a special young girl. Her courage is enough to get her through and help her defeat the bad guy without veering too far from what a normal girl her age would feel. She is both vulnerable and brave.
